“ The greatest gifts we can give our children are the roots of responsibility and wings of independence”
Maria Montessori My name is Anne Buchanan and I am one of the Montessori Teachers in our SD71 Montessori Program. I love being a teacher and walking into my classroom of students who are motivated to learn, love to explore and are kind and playful with one another. I am so appreciative of the families who immerse themselves into our classroom learning community and who join us on many fieldtrips. Spending time understanding what our responsibilities are with regards to giving back and cherishing the world we live in, is the greatest gift I can give my students. Reconnecting with my past learners is always such a gift as they share their successes and reflect on their years in Montessori. When my students are kind and gracious to one another and use their education to be active citizens in our world, it is evident that the strengths of the Montessori philosophy has a powerful impact. Developing intrinsically motivated students who strive to be their best selves is my goal as their teacher. My interest in the Montessori method of education began when I learned that my husband and his 5 siblings attended Metchosin Montessori from age 3 - grade 4. Their inquisitive natures, passion for learning and enthusiasm for life drew my interest and curiosity to further explore this Montessori Method of Learning. When my four sons were young, I knew I wanted to return to the Comox Valley to raise them after spending ten years teaching in the Lower Mainland in the Public Montessori program. Initially, I worked in a variety of positions before I landed in the newly established Montessori program that had just been approved. For this reason, I want to acknowledge the commitment of Allan Douglas, Director of Instruction, and the founding families who brought Montessori to our District and to thank them for hiring me to begin the program by teaching k/1 at the first location - Glacier View Elementary. Since that time, I have had the gift of teaching all grade levels within our multi graded program and am presently guiding students in their learning in grades 6/7. With a focus on literacy and numeracy and inquiry based learning, students have the opportunity to engage in their interests and develop their passions. My students teach me daily, inspire me and make me laugh out loud. It is a gift to spend time with these incredible yet diverse individuals and observe them growing into students that later come back to visit. Credentials:
